WORKING GROUP 4

Bioactive Potential of Extracted Fibers

WG4 coordinates work to investigate the potential bioactive properties of extracted fibers, including antioxidant activity, bound phenolics, prebiotic potential, interactions with gut microbiota and the release of bioactive compounds during digestion. The group aims to develop and apply appropriate experimental approaches for assessing bioavailability and bioefficacy while distinguishing laboratory findings from substantiated health effects. The resulting evidence is intended to inform sustainability and regulatory evaluation (WG5) and the exploration of potential applications in collaboration with WG6.

Key Tasks (KT)

KT4.1: Characterize bound phenolics & bioactivities

KT4.2: Evaluate gut modulation & prebiotic action

KT4.3: Study release of bioactives during digestion

KT4.4: Develop bioavailability/bioefficacy protocols

Key Activities (KA)

KA4.1: Comparative antioxidant studies

KA4.2: In vitro gut simulation studies

KA4.3: Training School TS3 – Bioactive Fibers

KA4.4: Build a bioactivity database
